MUMBAI, MARCH 3. Andhra Pradesh XI got a body blow in the form of a Tata Sports Club equaliser at the hooter in a topsy-turvy 42nd Union Bank-sponsored Bombay Gold Cup hockey first round knock-out game at the Mahindra stadium. The former protested briefly about the ball rolling over the goalline off a Glen D'Souza hit after the hooter had sounded. Tournament Director Peter Menezes went by the umpire's version, leading to penalty strokes since the scores were tied 3-3 at that point. AP, upset at victory virtually being snatched away from its grasp on a technical ruling, converted just two off the five strokes against three by Tata SC, which made most of the fresh lease of life to win 6-4. The event is co-sponsored by Punjab National Bank and State Bank.
Karnataka XI pumped in four goals against Maharashtra State Police to win the first match of the day 4-1 and will take on a junior squad, BHA Colts, in the second round.
