Labourer killed in accident

Bidar March 3. A construction labourer was killed when a tractor carrying stones by which she was travelling, overturned near the Karanja Irrigation Canal at Bhatambra in Bhalki taluk on Tuesday. The police said the victim, Sharadabai Samartha (40), was buried under the stones and died on the spot. Mahadevi Mallikarjun, another labourer who was travelling with her, was admitted to hospital with serious injuries. A case has been registered at Bhalki Rural Police Station.

Ayurveda course in London

Manipal March 3 . The Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), H.S. Ballal, said on Wednesday that the academy was in talks with the head of SDM Ayurveda Institutions, D. Veerendra Heggade, for starting a certificate course in Ayurveda in London. He was presiding over a workshop on "Teaching, research and practice in Ayurveda terminology" organised by the Kasturba Medical College and the Union Human Resource Development Ministry here. Dr. Ballal said that considerable research had been done on Ayurveda. All systems of medicines, be it allopathy or homoeopathy, were working for the wellbeing of the people. All systems of medicine had their own advantages and disadvantages. Ayurvedic medicines could be used to complement allopathic medicines. B.S. Behara, Commissioner for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Human Resource Development Ministry, said that innovation facilitated progress. Pradeepkumar G., Associate Dean of KMC, welcomed the gathering. K.J. Malagi proposed a vote of thanks. Gurumadhwa Rao, Registrar of MAHE, was present.

Advani to visit Kunigal

TUMKUR MARCH 3. The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, will visit Kunigal in Tumkur district on March 12 as part of his rath yatra, which starts from Kanyakumari on March 10. He was here last Sunday. Sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party local unit said Mr. Advani would arrive at Kunigal on March 10. The 17-day first phase of the rath yatra would cover 4,125 km before reaching Amritsar on March 26. The yatra would pass through 12 districts in the State. The objective of the road show was to consolidate the gains from the Centre's "India Shining" campaign, the sources said.

Plantation workers' convention

CHIKMAGALUR MARCH 3. The Indian National Plantation Workers' Federation, comprising eight trade unions affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress, will hold a convention here on Sunday. The convention will discuss measures to overcome the crisis facing the plantation industry. The trade union representatives told presspersons here today that there were 20 lakh workers in coffee, tea, and rubber plantations and only about 50 per cent of the permanent workers got minimum wages. Regretting that the Minimum Wage Act and the Provident Fund Act were not implemented, they said the trade unions had stood by the growers during the crisis. They said they would demand that the two laws be implemented.

Weaver ends life

Belgaum March 3. Gangappa Jakappa Hooli (50), a weaver, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his house in Anantpur in Yamkanmardi Police Station limits on Tuesday. The police said Gangappa was despondent after he suffered losses. A native of Ramdurg, he used to visit Anantpur and Belgaum regularly. On Tuesday morning, he consumed poison and died after he was taken to the Government Hospital, Belgaum. The Yamkanmardi police have registered a case of unnatural death. The police said Gangappa had not taken any loan.

Boy dies of snakebite

Bidar March 3. A 13-year-old schoolboy died of snakebite in Dongapur in Bhalki taluk on Tuesday. According to the police, Satish Shankar, a seventh standard student, died after a snake bit him near his house. A case has been registered in the Bhalki Rural Police station.
