KUMILY, MARCH 3. The week-long `Periyar Carnival' got under way here today in the presence of hundreds of people including foreign tourists. The inaugural function, which was to be a high-profile affair, received a set back as the Chief Minister, A.K Antony, and his colleagues P. Sankaran and K. Sudhakaran kept off the function an account of the model code of conduct imposed by the Election Commission in view of the ensuing elections to Parliament. Although the Tourism Minister, P. Sankaran, was present in Kumily, he did not participate in the function. In the absence of any dignitaries, the carnival was inaugurated by a group of children. E. M. Augasthy, MLA, presided and former MP Francis George and others extended felicitations. The festivities began with a colourful cultural pageantry taken out from the Kumily Government High School grounds. Floats and traditional art forms were presented by Kudumbasree units and members of Eco-development Committees. Students from local schools also participated in the cultural pageantry. The carnival has been designed with a focus on eco tourism in order to attract more tourists to the various tourism spots in the district.
