Festival at Sree Krishna temple begins

THRISSUR, MARCH. 3. The annual festival of the Sreekrishna temple in Guruvayur near here began on Wednesday.

Gopi Kannan came first in an elephant race (`Anayottam'), held this evening as part of the festival, beating four others. In all, 40 elephants of the Guruvayur Devaswom were part of a procession taken out to the venue.

According to the Guruvayur Devaswom, the budget of the festival is Rs.38.2 lakhs. Of this, Rs.24 lakhs will be spent on serving food to the devotees. The cultural programmes will cost Rs.1.55 lakhs.

The following is the festival schedule:

March 4: Anjam Krishnan Namboodiri speaks on `Bhakti yoga', 10 a.m.; presentation of Thiruvathirakkali by Thiruvenkidam Meenu Amma, Poovathur Deepti Mahila Samajam, 5 p.m.; dance programme by Bangalore Nritta Kala Kendra, 7 p.m.; staging of Yakshagana by Mangalore Ramachandra Yellur;

March 5: Discourse by Swami Mridananda on `Jnana yoga', 10 a.m.; cultural programmes by students of Guruvayur U.P. School, 3 p.m., and Devaswom employees; Krishnanattom, 7 p.m.;

March 6: K. Bhaskaran Nair speaks on `Karma yoga'; Ottanthullal by Jayaprabha Sankaranarayanan and Kalamandalam Mohanakrishnan, 3 p.m.; dance programme by Subramania Kalakshetram, Cherpu, 5 p.m.; veena recital by Chennai Geeta Krishnamurthy, 7 p.m.;

March 7: Narayanankutty speaks on `Raja yoga', 10 a.m.; Chakyarkoothu by Margi Madhu, 3 p.m.; ashtapadi recital by Chennai Udayalur Kalyanaraman, 5 p.m.; staging of Kerala Nadanam by Guru Gopinath Trust, Kottayam;

March 8: K.P.C. Anujan Bhattathiripad speaks on `Kshetra Kshetrajna yoga', 10 a.m.; cultural programmes by students of Sreekrishna College, Guruvayur, 3 p.m.; devotional music programme by Kozhikode Mohandas, 5 p.m.; ballet by Oachira Nritta Sanghom, 7 p.m.;

March 9: T. K. Parasuram speaks on `Dhyana yoga', 10 a.m.; Patakam by Nelliyodu Vasudevan Namboodiri, 3 p.m.; dance programme by Rajarajeswari Kalakshetra, 5 p.m.; Carnatic vocal recital by Unnikrishnan, 7 p.m.;

March 10: Thottam Krishnan Namboodiri speaks on `Sankhya yoga', 8-30 a.m.; Kaikottikkali by Ramani Antharjanam and Sreelatha Narayanan Namboodiri, 3 p.m.; Harikatha by M. S. Thripunithura, 5 p.m., Kuchipudi by Vempatti Chinna Sathyam's troupe, 7 p.m.;

March 11: Vaidyalinga Sarma speaks on `Vibhuthi yoga', 10 a.m.; prize distribution, 11 a.m. and

March 12: Discourse by Swami Tattwamayanda.
