Haryana Govt. signs MoU with Sun Microsystems

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sun Microsystems to adopt open source office productivity tool, the StarOffice 7, for its departments and educational institutions. Commissioner and Secretary, Electronics and Information Technology, Haryana, Harbakhsh Singh, signed the MoU on behalf of the State Government and Managing Director of Sun Microsystems India, Bhaskar Pramanik, signed on behalf of the multi-national company. Addressing a press conference later, Dr. Harbakhsh Singh, described the MoU as a breakthrough agreement for adoption of open-source based technologies in the government sector. He said the Government had decided to sign an agreement for the software because it was an economical option and had compatability with the existing sytems.
