101 p.c. success for Pulse Polio
According to the release, 66,424 children (102 per cent) were administered polio drops in Bidar taluk, 43,593 (101 per cent) in Humnabad, 45,985 (100.9 per cent) in Basavkalyan, 37,676 (102.5 per cent) children in Bhalki and 36,435 children (101.9 per cent) were vaccinated in Aurad taluk.
Snap strike
It is learnt that the prisoners told their lawyers and others in a magistrate's court about the alleged irregularities when they were taken there on Monday. The situation was brought under control after the jail authorities promised the prisoners that they would look into the matter.
NAAC grade
According to a press release, the Council's Peer Committee, which visited the college for two days from January 23 for assessment, informed this to the college in a communiqué.

Three held
The police, who gave the names of the arrested as Bosaiah, Mallikarjuna and Siddesh, said they raped the woman and murdered her on February 8. A case was registered at Jagalur Police Station on February 9. Following a tip-off, the three persons were taken into custody. Interrogations revealed that they had raped and murdered the woman, police claimed.

Fares for Volvo service cut
BANGALORE March 3. Long-distance travellers can now use the Bangalore-Tirupati Volvo service and a few Rajahamsa services of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at reduced rates. A KSRTC release says the fare for the Bangalore-Tirupati Volvo service (day trip) has been reduced to Rs. 175 from Rs. 200. The following Rajahamsa services are now available at reduced fares: Kundapur-Hyderabad (Rs. 404 as against the earlier fare of Rs. 438), Bangalore-Bidar (Rs. 349 as against Rs. 384), Virajpet-Bangalore (Rs. 133 as against Rs. 147), Mysore-Virajpet (Rs. 57 as against Rs. 63), Kukkesubramanaya-Bangalore (Rs. 153 as against Rs. 169).
Elected Treasurer of ICAI panel
Bangalore March 3. K.S. Madhava Murthy, a chartered accountant from Bangalore, has been elected Treasurer of the Southern Indian Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for 2004-05. The regional council has representatives from Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry. Mr. Murthy was the Chairman of the Bangalore branch during 2002-03 when it received the Best Branch Award.
Govt. urged to withdraw order
Bangalore March 3. The State Janata Dal (S) General Secretary, K.N. Chakrapani, has urged the State Government to withdraw its notification making the payment of site value compulsory while regularising unauthorised construction of houses in some areas in and around Bangalore city. Mr. Chakrapani told presspersons here on Tuesday that poor people who had constructed unauthorised houses on government and civic land in Yelahanka, Kuvempunagar, Vinayakanagar and Varadarajanagar were being asked to pay Rs. 147 a sq. ft for regularisation of their constructions. He said the amount stipulated was exorbitant and the poor could not afford to pay the amount. Mr. Chakrapani has urged the Government to withdraw the government notification issued in September 2003.
Court notice to Mattanavar
BANGALORE March 3. The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday ordered issuance of notice to Girish Loknath Mattanavar, sub-inspector from Gulbarga district who was arrested by the Bangalore city police for allegedly planting explosives in the Legislators' Home last year. A lower court had granted him bail till December 2003, and the State appealed against the bail in the High Court.
Tanir Bavi resumes power production
MANGALORE MARCH. 3. With the 220 MW barge-mounted Tanir Bavi Power Company (TBPC) commencing commercial operations here on Wednesday, the power situation in Karnataka is expected to improve significantly. The State has been facing load shedding in the past few days on account of disruption in power production at its various centres including Tanir Bavi plant here. Sources said Tanir Bavi started trial operation at the plant on Tuesday and commenced power generation on Wednesday. Mechanical snags were detected in two of the five generators at TBPC about 15 days ago. The defect was noticed by a team of engineers from Asea Brown Boveri, who had come to TBPC on February 15 for annual maintenance of plant generators. Sources said the company also carried out annual maintenance during the period.
