Programme

MYSORE March 3 . Sri Kalki Spiritual Centre, Mysore, will hold a special programme to mark the birthday of Kalki Bhagavan on March 7.

According to a statement, a rath yatra will be organised in the city at 3.30 p.m. The yatra will conclude on the premises of the centre at 1235, N.S. Road, Devaraj Mohalla, at 6 p.m.

Satsang, bhajans, a mass prayer, and a prayer for global peace will be held in the evening at 6 p.m.

Office-bearers

MYSORE March 3. The following are the office-bearers of the Insurance Workers' Organisation of Mysore Division for 2004-05.

H.V. Ranganath (president), G.S. Ganesh and S. Venkatesh Murthy (vice-presidents), V. Ramachandra (general secretary), N. Nagashayana (organising secretary), S.N. Vasudeva and B.N. Jayaram (joint secretaries), and Vijaykumar (treasurer).

Publication

MANGALORE MARCH 3. The Johnwill Marine Information Bureau at Kottara Chowki has brought out a publication on the activities of New Mangalore and Cochin ports, a press release said. G. J. Rao, chairman in-charge of the port trust, released it recently. He said it would serve as reference material for port users.

Rasta roko

MANGALORE MARCH 3. Motivators under the continuing literacy programme have decided to stage a rasta roko here on March 8 to urge the Government to release the honorarium due to them for the past one and a half years, a release said. The decision was taken at a meeting here recently.

The release said the Government had utilised the services of motivators to conduct a survey and prepare the list of families living below the poverty line and for the formation Stree Shakti self-help groups in addition to their regular duties. But several appeals made to the Government to release the honorarium went unheeded.

Stir threat

Bidar March 3. A farmers joint agitation committee has threatened to launch a series of rasta rokos at all hobli headquarters in Bidar district on March 8, if sugar factories fail to pay arrears of sugarcane suppliers in the district before Saturday.

The deadline was fixed after Eshwar Khandre, Chairman of the Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane, and Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, Chairman of the Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane, promised the committee that they would settle all arrears before March 6, according to a press release.

Tension

Raichur March 3. There was tension in Lingsugur town following a stone-throwing incident reported during Muharram procession on Monday. Apart from injuries to several activists of the Bajrang Dal, a police van, a jeep and a bus belonging to NEKRTC, were damaged in the incident.

At about 8.45 p.m., a youth threw a stone at the processionists which led to clashes between two groups.

A platoon of reserved police posted there was outnumbered when a few more groups from the two sides attacked each other with stones.

The police resorted to lathicharge on the mob when the situation went out of control. They burst tear gas shells and fired a few rounds of rubber bullets in the air when the irate groups threw stones at the van of the district Reserved Police.

101 p.c. success for Pulse Polio

Bidar March 3. Pulse Polio programme in Bidar district has achieved 101.7 per cent success. Health Department staff and volunteers administered polio drops to 2,30,117 children aged less than five during the four-day programme in five taluks in the district, according to Shivashankar Naregal in a press release.

According to the release, 66,424 children (102 per cent) were administered polio drops in Bidar taluk, 43,593 (101 per cent) in Humnabad, 45,985 (100.9 per cent) in Basavkalyan, 37,676 (102.5 per cent) children in Bhalki and 36,435 children (101.9 per cent) were vaccinated in Aurad taluk.

Snap strike

Bidar March 3. Some prisoners of the Bidar District Jail resorted a snap strike on Monday saying that they were not getting adequate food and other facilities. There was confusion for some time when some prisoners refused to eat and started shouting slogans against the jail authorities, demanding better facilities. They alleged that some jail officials were diverting food and other material meant for prisoners to traders.

It is learnt that the prisoners told their lawyers and others in a magistrate's court about the alleged irregularities when they were taken there on Monday.

The situation was brought under control after the jail authorities promised the prisoners that they would look into the matter.

NAAC grade

Bidar March 3. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has granted "B plus" grade to the Karnataka College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Bidar.

According to a press release, the Council's Peer Committee, which visited the college for two days from January 23 for assessment, informed this to the college in a communiqué.

Discourse

GULBARGA March 3. Sri Vasudevanandji, a disciple of the Sant Bapuji of the Sant Sri Ashram, Ahmedabad, will visit Gulbarga to give a four-day spiritual discourse on the Bhagavad Gita from March 8.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Wednesday, the President of the Sri Yoga Vedanta Seva Samiti, Vishwanath Chimkod, said Sri Vadevanandji, was visiting Gulbarga for the first time. He would give discourses at 5 p.m. on March 8, 9 a.m. on March 9, 5 p.m. on March 10 and 9 a.m. on March 11.

Three held

DAVANGERE MARCH 3. The police have arrested three persons on a charge of raping a woman and murdering her.

The police, who gave the names of the arrested as Bosaiah, Mallikarjuna and Siddesh, said they raped the woman and murdered her on February 8. A case was registered at Jagalur Police Station on February 9. Following a tip-off, the three persons were taken into custody. Interrogations revealed that they had raped and murdered the woman, police claimed.

Fares for Volvo service cut

BANGALORE March 3. Long-distance travellers can now use the Bangalore-Tirupati Volvo service and a few Rajahamsa services of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at reduced rates. A KSRTC release says the fare for the Bangalore-Tirupati Volvo service (day trip) has been reduced to Rs. 175 from Rs. 200. The following Rajahamsa services are now available at reduced fares: Kundapur-Hyderabad (Rs. 404 as against the earlier fare of Rs. 438), Bangalore-Bidar (Rs. 349 as against Rs. 384), Virajpet-Bangalore (Rs. 133 as against Rs. 147), Mysore-Virajpet (Rs. 57 as against Rs. 63), Kukkesubramanaya-Bangalore (Rs. 153 as against Rs. 169).

Elected Treasurer of ICAI panel

Bangalore March 3. K.S. Madhava Murthy, a chartered accountant from Bangalore, has been elected Treasurer of the Southern Indian Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for 2004-05. The regional council has representatives from Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry. Mr. Murthy was the Chairman of the Bangalore branch during 2002-03 when it received the Best Branch Award.

Govt. urged to withdraw order

Bangalore March 3. The State Janata Dal (S) General Secretary, K.N. Chakrapani, has urged the State Government to withdraw its notification making the payment of site value compulsory while regularising unauthorised construction of houses in some areas in and around Bangalore city. Mr. Chakrapani told presspersons here on Tuesday that poor people who had constructed unauthorised houses on government and civic land in Yelahanka, Kuvempunagar, Vinayakanagar and Varadarajanagar were being asked to pay Rs. 147 a sq. ft for regularisation of their constructions. He said the amount stipulated was exorbitant and the poor could not afford to pay the amount. Mr. Chakrapani has urged the Government to withdraw the government notification issued in September 2003.

Court notice to Mattanavar

BANGALORE March 3. The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday ordered issuance of notice to Girish Loknath Mattanavar, sub-inspector from Gulbarga district who was arrested by the Bangalore city police for allegedly planting explosives in the Legislators' Home last year. A lower court had granted him bail till December 2003, and the State appealed against the bail in the High Court.

Tanir Bavi resumes power production

MANGALORE MARCH. 3. With the 220 MW barge-mounted Tanir Bavi Power Company (TBPC) commencing commercial operations here on Wednesday, the power situation in Karnataka is expected to improve significantly. The State has been facing load shedding in the past few days on account of disruption in power production at its various centres including Tanir Bavi plant here. Sources said Tanir Bavi started trial operation at the plant on Tuesday and commenced power generation on Wednesday. Mechanical snags were detected in two of the five generators at TBPC about 15 days ago.

The defect was noticed by a team of engineers from Asea Brown Boveri, who had come to TBPC on February 15 for annual maintenance of plant generators. Sources said the company also carried out annual maintenance during the period.
