BJP to support Sangma in Tura seat

SHILLONG, MARCH 3. With the Nationalist Congress Party having decided to field its leader, Purno A. Sangma, at the Tura Lok Sabha in Meghalaya's Garo Hills region, the BJP today said it would support the former Lok Sabha Speaker in the contest.

The BJP's State unit president and MLA, A.L. Hek, said here today that the party would ratify its decision in a meeting here tomorrow. For the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, the BJP State leadership has more or less decided not to field its own nominee and rather support a "consensus" candidate of regional parties. A final decision would be taken on March 5, he said.

The NCP's State unit president, Edmund K. Sangma, however, said that "if the regional parties failed to decide on a consensus candidate, we will think twice." The move comes after a decision taken by the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance on March 1 to give a free hand to its constituents to field their own candidates for the coming polls.
