Regional holiday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 3 . The District Collector has declared a regional holiday on March 9 for Government offices and educational institutions in the Nedumangad municipal area in view of the `Ammankoda' festival at the Nedumangad Muthumariamman temple. An official pressnote issued here today said there would be no change in the examinations scheduled for the day.

Award

planned

The Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, said here today that the Government would consider a proposal to institute an award for the best industrialist in the State. Speaking after distributing the IT-Tourism Super Awards - 2003 instituted by the Kerala Sahrudaya Vedi, he stressed the need to generate employment opportunities and rise above political considerations to promote industrial growth. The IBS group chairman, V.K. Mathews, and the Abad Plaza chairman, Riaz Ahmed, received the awards. The BJP State secretary, K. Raman Pillai, presided.

Protest

against ban

The Thiruvananthapuram Press Club today protested against the ban imposed by the Kerala Film Producers Association on the film weekly `Vellinakshatram'. A pressnote quoting the club president, J. Ajeth Kumar, and the secretary, K. Sreekantan, termed the ban as an assault on the freedom of expression. It urged the association to revoke the ban.

Biography released

The Thiruvananthapuram Auxiliary Bishop, Joshua Mar Ignatios, said here today that the pioneering efforts of P.N. Panikker, the founder of the library movement in Kerala, had laid the foundation for the development of the State. He was speaking after releasing a biography of P.N. Panikker brought out by the Cultural Publications department.

Felicitated

The winner of the State film award for the best debutant director, Nemom Pushparaj, was accorded a warm reception by his colleagues at a function organised at the State Institute of Encyclopedic Publications. The Institute director, Vellayani Arjunan, presided over the function. Mr. Pushparaj won the award for the film `Gowreesankaram'.

Office-bearers

The Thiruvananthapuram chapter of the Indian Institute of Chartered Accountants has elected G.N. Nair as chairman and Subramania Sarma as secretary. Mr. Nair is the executive director, Hindustan Latex. The chapter also elected other office-bearers.
