SISI to offer diploma course in gemmology

TIRUCHI, MARCH 4 . The Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), functioning under the Union Ministry of Small Scale Industries, will offer a three-month home study-cum-practical diploma course in gemmology from March 15 onwards.

The programme to be conducted under the auspices of the SISI Gem and Jewellery Training Centre, Gobichettipalayam, would include 15 days of practical sessions, at Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Gobichettipalayam and Chennai.

The course was being introduced to motivate educated unemployed youths take up small-scale ventures in gem and jewellery industry, the Assistant Director of SISI, B.Venkataramana, said in a press release.

The diploma course is being offered following good response to the certificate courses offered by the SISI on diamond identification and grading, identification of natural gems, natural diamond cutting and polishing and natural gem stone cutting and polishing.

The diploma course would provide a basic knowledge on gems, their chemical composition, weights and measurements, crystallography, gem and diamond cutting, jewellery designing and making, marketing issues and export procedures.

The candidates would be trained in testing polished and raw gems and diamonds, identification of gems through scientific instruments, quality and value assessment and procurement. Practical training would be provided for five days at the end of every month.

Jewellers, goldsmiths, appraisers, merchants, export and importers and aspiring entrepreneurs could join the course.

Candidates who have passed Plus 2 would be eligible to apply for the course.

The course fee is Rs.10500, payable in two instalments. Fifty per cent concession would be extended to SC/ST and physically handicapped candidates, while women would be given 10 per cent concession in the course fee. The course would be conducted by N. Lingeswaran, gemologist.
