CHENNAI, MARCH 4. The Hindu Higher Secondary School is planning to celebrate its post-centenary golden jubilee in the academic year 2004-2005. The former Director-General of Police, V.K. Rajagopalan, who is an alumnus of the school and member of the fund-raising committee, said plans were on to invite many dignitaries including the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, for the celebrations. In connection with the celebrations, the Hindu Educational Organisation had invited contributions from the public, philanthropists and former students towards the establishment of a corpus fund. The broad objectives of using the funds were to establish and run centres for value education, knowledge management and human capital, to set up a permanent museum of Indian and Tamil culture, to preserve the school as a heritage building and create a trust for aiding retired teachers in need. The school, founded in 1852 by M.A. Singarachariar, has a long list of prominent alumni, including prime ministers of the Madras Presidency, a Nobel laureate, judges, editors, musicians, actors, IAS and IPS officers, heads of the Ramakrishna Math, film actors, sportsmen, according to T. Vipranarayanan, the 38th headmaster of the school.
