Temperature

MADURAI, MARCH 4. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 35.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 22.8 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 108.6 feet. The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.13 feet with a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was at 974 mcft.

Commits suicide

A Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation supervisor (under suspension) committed suicide on Wednesday.

According to the police, M. Chandran (24) of Iyyanarpuram, working as a supervisor in the Pappapatti Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) outlet, was suspended on charges of certain irregularities last week. When repeated efforts to get the suspension proved futile, Chandran committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his house last night.

The Uthapppanaickanur police have registered a case.

Awareness camp

The Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri-Business conducted a consumer awareness camp on Wednesday. The Deputy Director of Agriculture (Marketing), D. Bose, presided. The manufacturers of Agmark- certified `masala' powder traders and consumers were cautioned about the adulteration menace of `sudan-red' chemical dye (used for colouring cotton threads) with chillies and chilli powder, which caused health hazard.

The Agricultural Officer (Chemistry), State AGMARK Grading Laboratory, Madurai-North, T. Kartikeyan, conducted a test to detect the presence of the dye in chilli powder.

National

Safety Day

The increase in awareness among employees of industrial safety has resulted in a decline in accident rate in the State, M. A. Mohammed Farook, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories, said at the National Safety Day function held at Madura Coats Centenary Mill today.

C. S. Ramachandran, Spinning Manager, D. J. C. Barnes, Welfare Officer, M. Alagappan, Safety Officer, and N. Pandiarajan, Engineering Executive, spoke.

Book release

A book, `Comparative Literature - Principles and Learning Methods', authored by M. Tirumalai, Head and Coordinator, School of Tamil Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, was released by the Vice-Chancellor, P. K. Ponnuswamy, on Monday.

New forum

A new forum, Madurai Women Lawyers' Association, was formed recently under the presidentship of V. Epsibai to fight for women lawyers in Madurai and southern districts and protect the interests of women through legal means. It demands included grant of writ jurisdiction to the proposed High Court Bench in Madurai and 33 per cent reservation for women in the judiciary and the legislature.
