Commercial tax officials held on graft charge

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MARCH 4 . In a swift operation, sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption today arrested two commercial tax officials here on charges of bribery.

According to DVAC sources, a special team laid a trap at the commercial tax office shortly after lunch following a specific complaint. As soon as the Commercial Tax Officer (Tirupparankunram Circle), Palanichamy, and the Assistant Commercial Tax Officer, Kottairaj, accepted Rs. 4,000 from the complainant, a private motor company manager, the waiting police personnel took the duo into custody.

During a preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to having demanded the bribe for issuing a registration certificate to the complainant. "They voluntarily handed over the day's collection of Rs. 10,000. We have seized some documents for further investigation," a DVAC official told presspersons this evening. He said the police also conducted a simultaneous raid on the house owned by the CTO at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district.

Meanwhile, some Commercial Tax employees prevented mediapersons from entering the office during the raid.
