Princess of Denmark coming on March 10

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, MARCH 4. The Princess of Denmark, Princess Benedikte, is visiting Madurai on March 10 to take part in a diabetic retinopathy review meeting to be held at the Aravind Eye Hospitals.

Princess Benedikte is the patron of the World Diabetes Foundation, based in Denmark, supporting prevention and treatment of diabetes in the developing countries. She is accompanied by the Board of Directors of the WDF and also the Danish Ambassador in India, Michael Sternberg.

The Princess is also visiting the famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple after her scheduled meetings at the Aravind Hospitals.

The Princess is expected to make an announcement on the diabetes project, which the WDF is jointly implementing with the hospital to combat diabetic retinopathy.

The Director of Aravind Hospitals, P. Namperumalsamy, told The Hindu here today that elaborate arrangements had been made for the visit. On her arrival at the hospital, she would see all facilities and treatment available for the patients and hold talks with the hospital authorities and the ophthalmologists on diabetic retinopathy, which he said, was on the rise.

He said the WDF raised funds from industrialists and philanthropists and spent them in countries such as India where the complications arising out of diabetes were alarming. The WDF was funding two projects in Tamil Nadu — one for diabetic retinopathy in Madurai and the other project in Chennai, related to diabetic foot.

Retinopathy camps were being conducted with the WDF support at places like Tirunelveli and Theni, he said. The WDF and Aravind Hospitals were working together for the past one year, Dr. Namperumalsamy said.
