NCC units inspected

KURNOOL: The Deputy Director-General of NCC, Air Commodore James Sebastian, who is incharge of NCC activities in the State, inspected the NCC units here on Friday. Mr. Sebastian visited the units of 28 Andhra Battalion and 9 Andhra Girls Battalion. Later, he attended a meeting at Government Degree college and interacted with cadets.

Mr. Sebastian complimented the NCC cadets who were selected for Thal Sainik camp and won medals. The Group Commander, Col. K.S. Pathania, and other officers, Lt. Col. A.K. Prasad, Lt. Col. S.N. Sabnis, Lt. Col. Jeer, Major Sundharam, Maj. Raut. Capt Abdul Kadhar, were present.

Appointed

KURNOOL: The MRPS and Mahajana Sangharshana Samithi will field candidates beloning to SC, ST, BC and minorities in the next election. Patnam Rajeswari was named incharge of elections in Kurnool district. The party would highlight the issues concerning the downtrodden in the elections and exploitation of the poor in the area. The MRPS State president, Dandu Veeraiah, Rajeswari, Devapal and others were present at the press meet.

Fake certificate racket busted

CHITTOOR: The Chittoor two-town police on Thursday busted an inter-state racket in educational certificates and arrested four persons. The police seized fake certificates from him, according to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Muchapu Rao. Addressing a press conference, he said Lokesh Kumar of Santhapet, aged 24 years, had joined as constable in Madhya Pradesh with SSLC certificate which was sent for police verification. The verification revealed that the certificate was fake. The commanding officer complained to the Chittoor SP, asking him to take criminal action against Lokesh Kumar. Subsequently, the police arrested him.

During interrogation, he confessed that he had obtained the fake certificate by paying Rs.7000 to Gunasekhar. The latter revealed that fake certificates were supplied to him through Govindaswamy, Rajendran and Daivasikamani of Tamil Nadu. The police arrested all the persons, except Daivasikamani who was at large.

One killed in accident

NELLORE: One person was killed and two others were injured when the autorickshaw by which they were travelling was rammed into by a bus from behind, near Kondameedi Konduru village of A.S. Pet mandal of Nellore district on Friday. One of the injured was shifted to Nellore.

New brand of

mineral water

KURNOOL: The Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Dairy Development Corporation, Kuriakose, formally launched the Vijaya mineral water, bottled by the Kurnool dairy, here on Thursday. Addressing the function, Mr. Kuriakose said the dairy had diversified into mineral water to earn additional revenue as part of the strategies for financial viability.

The district Collector, Ajay Jain, the chairman of the Kurnool dairy, Bhuma Narayana Reddy, the MD, Bhushanna, and the manager, Krishna Prasad, were present.

Rasta roko

Cuddapah: Contractual electricity workers staged rasta roko before the office of the Chief Engineer (Transmission Lines and Sub-Stations) at Sankarapuram here on Friday, demanding reinstatement of a sub-station worker in Badvel, K. Srinivasulu.

School anniversary

KURNOOL: The Ravindra English Medium School, Madhavi Nagar Branch, celebrated the second anniversary here on Friday. The DEO, Abdul Mannan, and the Deputy EO, Gousia Begum, attended the function and appreciated the service rendered by Ravindra Group of institutions to the cause of education in Kurnool city. The director of the group of institutions, G. Pullaiah, and the correspondent, PBV Subbaiah, spoke.

State to contribute equity for railway line project

HYDERABAD: The State Government will participate in the new Obulavaripalli-Krishnapatnam Port railway line project by contributing 13 per cent equity, consisting of capital and land, according to the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda.

He was addressing a review meeting on Friday at Rail Nilayam on the project. The Additional Secretary, Ports, N. P. Ramakrishna Reddy, the South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager, T. Stanley Babu, and the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited representative, R. K. Jain, spoke. Mr. Stanley Babu said the project would be extremely profitable with a return of 16.5 per cent on investment. It would have the potential to handle about 20 million tonnes of traffic consisting of iron ore, barytes, coal and food grains.

Mr. Reddy stated that the port would be developed for handling ships and cargo up to 2 lakh tonnes. The Secretary, Transport, Roads and Buildings, Binoy Kumar, the Commissioner of Ports, Mangapathi Rao, the Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation Limited, Harpreet Singh, the Executive Director (commercial), NMDC, K.V.V. Sastry, the Chief Administrative Officer (construction), SCR, R.K. Goyal, S. S. Verma of Mineral Sales Private Ltd, and representatives of MMTC Ltd, Chougule & Co Ltd, and Krishnapatnam Port attended the meeting.

CM extends Holi greetings

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has greeted the people of the State on the occasion of Holi. In a message, he described Holi as a social event, which brings all sections of people, particularly children, together. "The festival of colours symbolises the triumph of good over evil," he said. Mr. Naidu wished that the festival would bring happiness to every family in the State.

Former TDP MLA quits party

Rajahmundry: The former MLA and chairman of Rajahmundry municipality, A.C.Y. Reddy, on Friday, announced his decision to resign from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Originally a Congressman, Mr. Reddy had failed to get the party's nomination in 1994 and 1999 Assembly elections. He had quit the Congress in 1999 and joined the TDP. Mr. Reddy reportedly felt `suffocated' in the TDP and the last straw came during the visit of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to Rajahmundry last month when Mr. Reddy felt he was ignored. Responding to questions, Mr. Reddy said that he would join the Congress. "Congress is my parent party," he said. Mr. Reddy who wields considerable influence in the city held a meeting with his supporters before announcing his decision to quit the TDP.

Farmer found dead at marketyard

NIZAMABAD: A 65-year-old farmer, who had came to the Nizamabad agriculture market committee two days ago, was found dead on the premises of the marketyard on Friday. According to information, the victim, Bonthala Bhojanna of Laxmanchanda mandal in Adilabad district, came to the marketyard to sell dried turmeric. He reportedly approached a commission agent and disposed off his produce. On Friday, he was said to have gone to attend nature's call in the open ground and collapsed. Farmers who found him lying on the ground alerted the officials. The police who arrived at the spot found him dead. After searching his pockets it was found that Bhojanna was an asthmatic and was carrying medicines with him. The police shifted the body to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem. The police said the death was natural and no foul play was suspected.

90 houses destroyed in fire

ONGOLE: Some 90 houses destroyed in a fire that broke out at Adi Andhra Christian Colony of Polepally in Donakonda mandal on Friday. According to information reaching here, the mishap occurred when fire emanated from the house of one G. Chinna George, and soon engulfed the entire colony due to blowing wind. Seeing this, one Murikipudi Kotaiah (40), collapsed after suffering a heart attack. An estimated Rs. 50 lakhs worth of property was destroyed. Officials rushed to the spot to undertake relief operations.

Debt-ridden ryot ends life

NALGONDA: Unable to cope with mounting debt burden, a farmer, Maccha Gopaiah(50) committed suicide near his field at Baswapuram in Bhongir mandal on Friday. According to the probationary Sub-Inspector, Janakamma, the ryot, owner of an acre of land and daily wage labourer, was found frothing at his mouth in the morning and died while being shifted to Bhongir hospital.

He is survived by wife, two sons and two daughters.

Two naxals surrender

WARANGAL: Two naxals belonging to CPUSI -- Korri Nagaraju alias Jang, deputy dalam commander, and Korri Rajitha alias Vennela member of the Sampath dalam of Mulgu area -- surrendered to the police in the presence of Warangal Superintendent of Police, Nalin Prabhat, here on Friday. According to a statement, Nagaraju was involved in 12 cases pertaining to exchange of fire, attacks and murder. Rajitha was involved in two incidents of exchange of fire and in the assault of one, Lal Nayak of Mahamutharam of Karimnagar.

Dowry death alleged

KARIMNAGAR: A housewife was allegedly killed and her body thrown into an agricultural well by her husband and in-laws following her failure to get additional dowry, in Alugunur village of Thimmapur mandal, on Thursday night. The police said the victim, U. Bhoolaxmi (22) of Nawabpet village in Chigurumamidi mandal, married U. Sambashiva Reddy of Alugunur, two years ago. At the time of marriage, the groom was given Rs. 1.6 lakhs in cash as dowry and another Rs. 20,000 besides utensils and household goods. Three months after marriage, Reddy started harassing Bhoolaxmi for an additional Rs. 50,000. The police said relatives of the victim complained that Bhoolaxmi was beaten to death and later her body was dumped in the well. They alleged that her in-laws had harassed Bhoolaxmi for additional dowry. She is survived by a five-month-old baby. The police have registered a case and investigating.
