VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 5. Holi, the festival of colours, falling on Saturday, should be celebrated in the traditional manner avoiding harm to environment and health, the National Green Corps appealed to the people, youth and the students. In the "Kaama Dahanam'' and "Holika Dahanam'' rituals, people must avoid burning of tree trunks, wood, tyres and plastic items as the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emanating from the fumes would pollute the air. Also cancer-causing pollutants would enter the atmosphere when plastic was burnt. Instead of burning tree-trunks and wooden articles, it was better to burn cakes made of cow dung and a powder used for performing homams, the District Science Officer and convener of the National Green Corps, suggested in a press release here on Friday. The official appealed to the people, particularly children and students to avoid chemical colours since there were many cases of these colours used during the Holi festival, as they damaging eyes and skin partially or completely. Traditional colours should only be used to enjoy the festival of colours in its true sense.
