WASHINGTON, MARCH 6. The State Department has informed the House panel on Government Reform that nationals from nearly thirty countries, including from Japan and the European Union will be missing the October 26 deadline for improvised passports to facilitate entry into the United States without visas. The Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Maura Harty, told a Congressional panel on Thursday that nearly all of the countries including Britain, Germany, Italy and Japan will be missing the deadline. The demand for tourist visas, it is contended, will rise to about 12 millions for Fiscal 2005 from about 7 millions in 2003 and will, among other things, create significant visa backlogs.
