TIRUCHI, MARCH 6 . Teachers should play an active role in enrolling more students as volunteers of the Junior Red Cross (JRC), the Chief Educational Officer, V. C. Rameswaramurugan said. Speaking at a function organised by the JRC Sub-Committee of the Tiruchi Education District here yesterday, Mr. Rameswaramurugan said Tiruchi district had played a lead role in promoting the Red Cross movement, particularly in schools, thanks to the initiative taken by the teachers. The teachers should show more involvement in increasing the strength of the JRC volunteers. The CEO commended the student volunteers of the JRC for collecting donations of Rs.1.04 lakhs as Geneva Fund and handing them over to the Red Cross in the recent past. This fund was spent for launching projects for the benefit of the physically handicapped and the visually impaired. The District Education Officer, R. Muthukrishnan and others spoke. The CEO presented special awards to 10 JRC Counsellors of the schools in recognition of their outstanding service for promoting the Red Cross activities. The district convener of the JRC, P. Jeevanandham, in his report, said the JRC volunteers rose to the occasion and involved themselves in rescue and relief operations during the recent fire mishap in the Srirangam marriage hall. The selfless service rendered by them was well appreciated in various quarters. He said the three-day training camp held in the city recently evoked an overwhelming response from the students. The JRC volunteers were given a specialised training in first aid techniques, fire fighting, traffic management etc. Another national-level educational and training camp was hosted by the district last month in which about 150 student volunteers and teacher counsellors from eight States participated. The joint convener of the JRC, M. Jawahar Hasan, proposed a vote of thanks. Meanwhile, speaking at a three-day training programme for the JRC middle school counsellors, here recently, the chairman of the Tiruchi district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society, J. J. L. Gnanaraj, said it had been planned to enrol one lakh students under the programme by the end of April and sought the cooperation of the heads of higher secondary and high schools in this special campaign. The state president of the Indian Red Cross Society, Sarojini Varadappan, stressed the need for creating an awareness among the people of the Red Cross movement, its symbol etc. The district secretary, V.Badrinath, said awareness should be created among the JRC volunteers of environmental protection and ecological balance, for the preservation of flora and fauna. The headmaster of the Khajamian Higher Secondary School, A. Tufail Ahmed and others spoke.
