Form panels for poll activities, DMK functionaries told

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 6. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam union secretaries in the Tiruchendur Lok Sabha constituency have been asked to form a 20-member committee in every ward to carry out poll-related activities and identify polling agents who should be "real cadres and who cannot be purchased."

Addressing party workers' meeting held here today to introduce the candidate for the Tiruchendur Parliamentary constituency, V. Radhika Selvi, the secretary of the party's election working committee, V. Karuppasamy Pandian, said a minimum of 10 functionaries from the alliance parties should be accommodated in the committee and preference must be given to cadres of the Communist Parties to work as polling agents.

Besides carrying out election campaigns, the cadres should verify the electoral rolls once they were released, he said.

Though Mr. Karunanidhi formed a "formidable alliance" for the elections, the cadres should make a door-to-door campaign in favour of Ms. Radhika Selvi, the former MLA and DMK district secretary, R. Avudayappan, said.

Ms. Radhika Selvi, widow of `Pannaiyar' Venkatesan, who was killed in an encounter with the police in Chennai, thanked Mr. Karunanidhi and the party's deputy general secretary, M.K. Stalin, for giving an opportunity to contest the elections.

The former MLAs, A.L. Subramanian, and N. Periyasamy, and union secretaries from various areas spoke. Most of the speakers came down heavily on former Minister, Aladi Aruna, who was expelled from the DMK for "anti-party activities."
