Deve Gowda keen on reviving value-based politics

By Our Staff Correspondent

MOODBIDRI, MARCH 6. "Politics without corruption, rooting out the hate culture, and promoting communal amity are the three main factors that will decide the future of all political parties. The Janata Dal (Secular) will prominently feature all these three factors in its manifesto," the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has said.

Speaking after welcoming the All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) workers led by the former MLA and Minister, K. Amarnath Shetty, into the Janata Dal here on Saturday, Mr. Deve Gowda said the increase in poverty, ignorance, and communal hatred among different communities cast a slur on the country. The Janata Dal (S) was committed to revive the glory of the former Janata Dal regimes which were at the helm of affairs in 1984 and 1994.

Mr. Deve Gowda, who predicted a change in the "political culture" in the days to come, said people were fed up with the kind of politics that had been affecting their lives and depriving them of social security.

It was, therefore, the most opportune time for secular forces that believed in value-based politics to come together, he added.

He called upon the Janata Dal workers to work together to achieve political goals along with social ones, which would help to get rid of "bad elements" dogging politics and society.

Mr. Gowda expressed the confidence that the Janata Dal would emerge as a new force to reckon with in the days to come.

Referring to the statement reportedly made by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, in Mangalore to perform puja to "Bharat Mata," Mr. Deve Gowda said the citizens of India should be treated equally without assigning motives to the minorities as they were all the children of Bharata Mata.

He said if the true spirit of "Bharat Mata Pujan" prevailed, there would be no violence in the country like the one witnessed in Gujarat two years ago.

He termed the "India Shining" campaign of the Union Government "cheap and demagogic" methods of gaining popularity.

Mr. Deve Gowda said the campaign was started by the Centre to garner votes much before the code of conduct came into force.
