HYDERABAD, MARCH. 6. The State grid escaped a major tripping yesterday when the Talcher-Kolar transmission line suffered a technical problem. The Talcher line which was transmitting 1,400 MW from Talcher to the southern States, including 400 MW to Andhra Pradesh, developed trouble and went out of order. The frequency in the State fell to 48.4 cycles from 48.9 cycles. This is against the ideal 50 cycles prescribed for any grid. A total tripping of the grid was averted due to the timely action by the AP Transco. The authorities switched off a number of supply feeders in the State, imposing power cut in a number of places for two to four hours. Because of the relief taken on the load, the frequency climbed up again avoiding tripping of generation stations by a chain reaction. According to sources in the Transco, even after the restoration of the line after a few hours, the grid was back to normal ensuring normal supply in the face of heavy shortage caused by increased demand both in the agriculture and domestic sectors.
The sources said, efforts were on to buy from the Power Trading Corporation 600 MW from the present 300 MW and resort to overdrawals from the Central stations, to the tune of 300 MW. The present predicament is partly due to the fact that the generation at Srisialam has been completely stopped.
