Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 6. The Telugu Desam Party which wants Andhra Pradesh to remain united should explain what it has achieved so far in the united State and what it is proposing to do in future, the Congress member of the dissolved Lok Sabha from Bobbili, Botsa Satyanarayana, demanded here on Saturday. The TDP leaders had no right to talk about united Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the case of north coastal Andhra since no major irrigation project, industry or development plans to remove the backwardness of the region had been taken up during the nine-year TDP rule, Mr. Satyanarayana told a press conference. People of north coastal Andhra had been dutifully paying all kinds of taxes and power bills. While transmission losses were almost nil they did not receive any benefit, he said. The region did not get even three per cent of the allotment for the irrigation sector, he said. Visakhapatnam was recognised as the fastest growing city in the country, but the TDP failed to provide any infrastructure. All TDP leaders from this region had actively participated in the agitation for a separate Andhra State in the 1970s, but now they were supporting a united State, Mr. Satyanarayana said. However, he did not say categorically the Congress was for bifurcation of the State. He also denied that the pact with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti was meant only for political gains. Any issue should be discussed in detail before taking a decision and that was the reason the Congress was seeking a second States Reorganisation Commission, he tried to explain.
