Alternate day water supply from March 11

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, MARCH 6. The Municipal Corporation will implement alternate day water supply from March 11 in the city to ensure judicious use of water in the Gajuladinne project, which is the source for the city.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, the Commissioner, K. Venkatrami Reddy, said the city was depending upon the Gajuladinne reservoir since the Tungabhadra river dried up on February 15. However, the water available in the reservoir as on Saturday was only 293 tmcft. Around 40 cusecs was released for the city on daily basis.

The municipal water supply system supplied 80 lakh gallons per day to the residents. If the supply was on alternate days, the demand could be reduced to 55 lakh gallons.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has secured the release of water from the Tungabhadra dam on March 1 through the low-level canal (LLC). The flow already entered the Andhra border and was expected to reach the Gajuladinne reservoir by March 9. From the Andhra quota 0.88 tmcft was available in the Tungabhadra dam and 0.360 tmcft was expected to be realised at Gajuladinne after meeting the drinking water needs of various drinking water schemes en route.

Mr. Reddy said the water in Gajuladinne was to be judiciously used till June 15 by which time either the Tungabhadra was expected to start flowing or the LLC might be reopened. He said to supplement the supply of running water, borewells were sunk at various points in the city. He said the city was divided into two zones to facilitate the alternative supply.

The first zone comprises N.R. Pet, Dharmapet, Bangarupet, Roza, Prakash Nagar, Kothapet, NR Nagar, Gandhinagar, Eswar Nagar, Vidyanagar, Medam compound, Gipson Colony, Vaddegeri, Saibaba Sanjivanagar, Old Town, Kanderi, Pedda Market, Chidambarao Street, Uttaradi Matham and Jammichettu.

The areas in the second zone are: Budhawarpet, A. Camp, Laxminagar, Maddursubbareddy Nagar, Devanagar, Gayarti estate, J.N Nagar, C. Camp, Arora Nagar, Housing Board colony, B. Camp, Sriramnagar and Johrapuram. The residents could call on 250107 (Kurnool zone) and 231939 (Kallur area) in case of any difficulty.
