JAIPUR, MARCH 6. The Director-General of the Central Government's Department of Mines Safety, Ravindra Sharma, has called upon the owners of mines to ensure the safety of workers in their units while taking care of ecological and environmental aspects. The labourers engaged in mining should be trained in the safety measures, he said. Addressing a function marking the conclusion of Mines Safety Week in Bikaner over the week-end, Mr. Sharma pointed out that proper training of labourers would automatically improve the safety standards and increase productivity. "The mine owners should treat the laws on mining enacted by the Central Government as their guidelines,'' he said. Mr. Sharma said the Mines Safety Week was an occasion to review the security measures and make sure that the mistakes in the past were not repeated. He asked the mine owners to ensure that no labourer worked or operated machines in an inebriated state so as to avoid accidents. The Chairperson of the Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Limited, Meenakshi Hooja, said proper arrangements for education, health care and cleanliness in the residential colonies adjacent to mines should be made. She pointed out that safety and environment protection were important aspects of the marketing of minerals. The owners of 114 mines functioning in Rajasthan participated in the mines safety week and prizes under various categories were given to 15 mine operators of Kota and Ajmer divisions. The winners included the owners of marble quarries as well.
