KOLLAM, MAR.6. Members of a rival panel for the coming elections to the Kollam and Kundara SNDP Unions have decided to boycott the elections scheduled to be held on March 14. This was disclosed at a press conference held here by the leaders of the rival panel, D. Prabha, B. Purushothaman, S. Mohandas, G. Mohandas, P. Surendra Babu and others. Many of those from the rival panel were former office-bearers of the Kollam SNDP union in different capacities. Mr. Prabha was the Kollam Union president for 12 consecutive years. Differences of opinion had cropped up in the Yogam following the sudden decision of the SNDP Yogam to dissolve the Kollam unit and bifurcate the union into Kundara and Kollam in February 2002. This had even led to the formation of the SNDP Ekopana Samithy, a forum to oppose the style of functioning of the Yogam general secretary, Vellapally Natesan. For the coming elections to the two unions, those opposed to Mr. Natesan had filed nominations as a separate panel. However, the nomination of four prominent members from this rival panel to the Kollam Union had been rejected by the returning officer on ground that they had mentioned wrong registration numbers in the nomination forms.
