Forest fire

HASSAN MARCH 6. A fire broke out on Friday night in the Nagapure area of the 16,800-acre Hirekalgudda Reserve Forest in Arsikere taluk in Hassan district. More than 25 acres of vegetation has been gutted, and the fire is spreading to nearby areas, according to reports.

Sources said the Department of Forests had dispatched a team to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading. Fire tenders rushed from Arsikere town are struggling to put out the fire. It is difficult to take fire-fighting equipment atop the hill. According to the people, the fire is visible from Arsikere town, which is 20 km. from Hirekalgudda.

Accident

HASSAN MARCH 6. A couple died when the scooter on which they were travelling hit a sand- laden lorry parked in Channarayapatna town on Friday night. Manje Gowda (35) and Puttalakshmi (32) of Dindigur in Channarayapatna taluk died on spot. According to police, Manje Gowda hit the lorry to avoid collision with a mini lorry. Channarayapatna Police have registered a case.

Murder

HASSAN MARCH 6. A man was found murdered at Kelagina Hosakopplu on the outskirts of the city on Friday night. The police said the dead was Thimme Gowda of Hosakopplu village. According to police, Thimme Gowda was accused in a murder case. The police suspect old enmity to be the reason for the murder.

Flute recital

SHIMOGA March 6. Aalap, a Shimoga-based musical forum, has arranged a flute recital by Hariprasad Chaurasia at Kuvempu Rang Mandir here at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday. Ramdas Palsule of Pune will accompany him on Tabla.

Special scheme

MANGALORE MARCH 6. The Dakshina Kannada Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has announced a special scheme for free reconnection of telephones out of service.

In a press release, K.J. Chacko, Principal General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, said the scheme would be in effect till March 31.

Under the scheme, no rental would be levied on disconnected telephones for the intervening period between the date of disconnection and that of reconnection.

Sentenced

MANGALORE MARCH 6. A court here has sentenced a person to a month's imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 1 lakh in connection with the bouncing of a cheque.

The accused, S. Hamsa of Katipalla, had given a cheque for Rs. 67,000 to Shalet D'Silva in connection with a vehicle transaction. Ms. D'Silva filed a complaint before the fifth magistrate's court here stating that the cheque had bounced. The court sentenced the accused to imprisonment after the charge was found to be true.

ISO certificate

MANGALORE MARCH 6. The LPG import terminal of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) here has bagged the ISO 140001 certificate for having adopted the environment management system and implementing it at the facility.

This is the first of HPCL's terminals in India to receive the certification. The terminal is the biggest of its kind in South India, where LPG is unloaded, stored, and dispatched for wholesale trade. The terminal had also received the ISO 9001:2000 quality certification.

Fare cut

Bidar March 6. The North Eastern Road Transport Corporation has reduced the fare for a journey from Bidar and Bhalki to Bangalore in its Rajahamsa bus service from Rs. 384 to Rs. 349. According to a press release, the new fare will come into effect immediately.

Women's empowerment

MYSORE March 6. The NSS unit of the Government Industrial Training Institute in association with the Department of Women and Child Development is organising a seminar-cum-film show on empowerment of women on March 8 as part of the International Women's Day.

According to a press release from the office of the Principal, ITI, the seminar-cum-film show will begin at 3 p.m. on the institute's premises at N.R. Mohalla.

MYSORE March 6. The Karnataka Institute of Software Technology (KIST) is organising a 45-day computerised accountancy course for pre-university and degree students.

Check-up

MYSORE March 6. To mark the International Women's Day celebrations on March 8, the Bharat Diagnostic Centre will hold a health check-up for women on its premises on Irwin Road here.

According to a press release from the Bharat Hospital and Institute of Oncology, the objective of the check-up is to promote a healthy lifestyle.
