Kochi to host Santosh Trophy

KOCHI, MARCH 6. Kochi will host the 59th Santosh Trophy senior National football championship. The main phase matches will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here from May 1 to 15 this year. The Santosh Trophy comes to Kerala for the ninth time and to Kochi for the fourth time.

"Though Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram were keen on hosting the event and agreed to the financial terms, Kochi won the race as it has all the facilities, and almost all ready too," said the Kerala Football Association president, K. M. I. Mather, at a media conference here on Saturday.

"The main round matches are likely to be under floodlights and since the present lighting facilities at the Nehru Stadium are good for telecasting the matches, Kochi won on this count too," said Mr. Mather. "The All India Football Federation (AIFF) was keen that the lighting arrangements are good for relaying the matches live," he said.

The venues of the Santosh Trophy's preliminary round matches, which are expected to begin by the middle of April, will be finalised shortly.
