KOCHI, MARCH 6. Workers under the aegis of TRACO Cable Company Pothumekhala Samraskshana Samithy observed Saturday as `Public Sector Protection Day' and staged a dharna in front of the Irimpanam unit of the company. The protest was organised against what the trade unions at the company described as a move to privatise TRACO Cable. According to a spokesman for the samithy, a recommendation by the Enterprises Reforms Committee for the privatisation of the company was under the active consideration of the Industries Department. The spokesman said that the company's financial position was now weak and its order book was not full. If sufficient orders were received for cable from both the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the BSNL, the company's position could be strengthened, he said. The TRACO Cable has 696 workers on its rolls spread out in two of its unit, one of them being in Thiruvalla. The Irimpanam unit was set up in 1965 and virtually had the monopoly over cable manufacturing in South India. The unit has been manufacturing cables required for the Railways, the BSNL and the KSEB. Although the Irimpanam unit, specifically set up to manufacture cable for the KSEB and had an installed capacity to produce about Rs. 50-crore worth of cables, the current order position was to the tune of Rs. 22 crores. The CITU all-India secretary, M. M. Lawrence, inaugurated the dharna. The former Fisheries Minister, T. K. Ramakrishnan, Sebastian Paul, former MP, and K. Chandran Pillai, Rajya Sabha Member, and K. Babu, MLA, were among those who addressed the workers.
