Correction
In his Science paper, David Graddol, categorising Hindi and Urdu together, predicts that by 2050 they will be in second place behind Chinese (which already has the largest number of native speakers among the world's languages). Hindi and Urdu will not rank separately as second and third as stated in the editorial, "The Crumbling Tower of Babel" (March 6, 2004). Graddol also predicts that by 2050 native Arabic speakers will overtake native English speakers among youth in the 15 to 24 age group. However, as the proportion of native English speakers in the general world population declines, that of native Arabic speakers will rise to almost equal the native English speakers.
