Congress list to be ready by March 9: Thankachan

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, MARCH 6. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) acting president, P.P. Thankachan, has said that the list of Congress candidates for the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the State will be submitted to the party Central leadership on March 9 for scrutiny on March 11.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Thankachan said attempts were being made to select one candidate each for every constituency instead of submitting a panel of names for the seats. The KPCC chief said he would go to New Delhi with the list of candidates on March 9 after attending a meeting of the UDF liaison committee in Thiruvanathapuram that day. Only preliminary talks were held with different sections of leaders in the party and the selection of candidates would be based on the winning chances of the candidates rather their group affiliations.

He said that action would be taken against those who aired their views openly violating the direction issued by the KPCC. Those who violated the direction would have to face the consequences.

Mr. Thankachan said he had contacted the KPCC secretary, Rajmohan Unnithan, over phone today and sought an explanation from him on his public statement about exchanges of some Lok Sabha constituencies between the `I' and `A' groups in the party. Mr. Unnithan expressed regret over the statement.

The KPCC chief said the UDF meeting would discuss steps the Government should take to provide drought relief to the people of Palakkad. The front would also discuss inter-State water sharing agreements like Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (PAP).

Mr. Thankachan was here today to address a leadership meeting of the party in the district.
