TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 6. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has donated Rs. 1 lakh from her personal money to the Annai Haajira College for Women to be established at Melapalayam, near here, for Muslim girls, who normally put an end to their education after Plus-Two. The Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, handed over a cheque for the amount at a function held last night to Syed Ahmed, president of the As-Sathiq Educational Trust, which is setting up the college. Speaking at the function held to thank the Chief Minister for according minority status to the college, Mr. Nagendran said the permission was given by Ms. Jayalalithaa within 30 minutes after an appeal from the Trust to set up the college was brought to her notice. She also gave minority status to the college immediately. Listing the welfare measures being implemented by the Government for minorities, particularly Muslims, Mr. Nagendran said infrastructure in and around Melapalayam had been strengthened. The former judge of the Madras High Court, A. Abdul Hadi, spoke. The college, which will start functioning from the academic year 2004 - 2005 in a temporary building in the Haji Moolan Ali Garden, will offer B.Sc. (Mathematics), B.Sc. (Computer Science) and B.Com.
