Seminar on Women's Day
KOLLAM March.6. On the occasion of the International Women's Day on March 8, the Gramsci Sthreepaksha Padana Kendram is organising a seminar on the history of the International Women's Day. The seminar to be held at the Fine Arts Hall here will be inaugurated by the Kollam Mayor, Sabita Beegum.
Conferred
KOTTAYAM MARCH 6. The Kerala Government has conferred emeritus professorship on K. Jayakuamr, former professor and Head of the Department of neurosurgery at the Kottayam Medical College. He would continue to conduct classes and academic programmes at the Kottayam Medical College, according to a press note.
Adalat
The Kerala State Women's Commission would hold an adalat at the Kottayam Collectorate conference hall on March 16.
Job fair
KOZHIKODE MARCH 6 . A "job fair '' would be organised at the Malabar Christian College on March 13 by the Big Leap to provide an opportunity for students to get employment through campus recruitment. Major companies like the Accenture, Bangalore, the ICICI One Source and the Nest, Techno Park, Thiruvananthapuram, would take part in the event. The Big Leap director, Soji T. Abraham, today said the employers would require 100 technical support executives, 250 customer service executives and about 50 developers. Those interested in attending the campus recruitment programme should register their names at the Big Leap on fourth floor, Markaz building, Mavoor Road, Kozhikode (telephone 2724607). Only final year students whose candidature is endorsed by their department head and graduates would be considered, Mr. Abraham said.
Felicitated
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) group headquarters here felicitated select World War-II veterans and widows with cash awards and gifts on March 4. Colonel Georgy Joseph, group commander presented the cash awards and gifts.
Byelections
Byelections to three wards in the district would be held on April 6. These were: Maruthongara south in the Maruthongara panchayat, Velakkad in the Moodadi panchayat and Mokavur in the Elathur panchayat. The last date for filing of nominations was March 12 and the last date for withdrawal April 17. The counting of votes would take place on April 7.
Building fair
The Indian Institute of Architects would organise a fair featuring building materials and accessories on the Kozhikode Corporation Stadium grounds from April 29 to May 2. There would be nearly 100 stalls exhibiting Indian and foreign made materials used for interior decorations. The show would provide the public, merchants and entrepreneurs a chance to understand the new trends in the fields of construction and interior decoration, the organisers said.
Kadavoor orders probe
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MARCH 6. The Health Minister, Kadavoor Sivadasan, has ordered an inquiry into the diversion of free medicines, meant for the poor patients at the SAT Hospital here, for sale. The Minister said that in an official release here on Saturday the police had been asked to register a case and probe the matter. It was a life-saving medicine (I. B. Globin), costing Rs. 7,400 that was put on sale with Government seal at the fair price medical store near the hospital.
Diabetes clinic to be shifted
The Diabetes Clinic, working at Pulayanarkotta, with assistance of the Endocrinology Department of Mayo Clinic, U.S., would be shifted to the Public Health Laboratory here for the convenience of the public, the Minister for Health, Kadavoor Sivadasan, announced here on Saturday. The decision was taken at a review meeting of the Indian Institute of Diabetics that runs the clinic.
Plea to solve water crisis
The CPI(M) district secretary, M. Vijayakumar, has urged the Government to initiate urgent measures to solve the drinking water shortage in different parts of Thiruvananthapuram. In a statement here today, Mr. Vijayakumar said that people were trekking long distances and waiting for hours to get drinking water. Farmers were facing extensive crop loss and several hotels and lodges in the city were being forced to close down on account of water shortage. There were also reports of outbreak of diseases in the district, particularly in the coastal areas. The Government should take urgent measures to supply drinking water to the people, he added.
Programmes on women's day
Various organisations have announced their plans to observe the International Women's Day on March 8. The Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) will observe the day with programmes at eight centres. The observance would be marked by seminars and symposia on women's empowerment. The topics of discussion would include Indian Constitution and Common Civil Code, Law and Women, Women and Media and Women and Society, a KSSP release said here today. The Association of Woman Members In Governance (AWAMIGA) has decided to hold a seminar on 50 per cent reservation of seats for women in the local bodies.
SUCI plans Secretariat march
The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has decided to organise a Secretariat march on March 8 to protest against the globalisation policies of the Central and State Governments. The SUCI wants the Government to stop the Modernising Government Programme (MGP), drop the move to convert the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) into separate companies, restore public distribution system and withdraw all anti-labour laws, according to a statement here today by the party State secretary, C. K. Lukose.
Tanker lorries stopped
PALAKKAD MARCH 6. The anti Coca-Cola agitators stopped four tanker lorries carrying water to the company at Plachimada; the water was drained to a nearby field. The tanker lorries were stopped in the Kannimari, Pandikulam and Enthalpara areas near the factory today.
Allegation against P.C. Thomas
KOTTAYAM MARCH 6. The Kerala Congress (M) has accused the former MP and the Union Minister of Law, P. C. Thomas, of corruption in connection with a campaign in the Muvattupuzha parliamentary segment. Speaking to reporters, the party general secretary, Joy Abraham, and MLAs, Thomas Chazhikkadan and Joseph M. Puthussery, said that the IFDP activists were distributing a calendar depicting a "technically-altered picture" showing Mr. Thomas with the Pope against the backdrop of a picture of Mother Teresa.
