KOLLAM, MARCH. 6. The CITU general secretary, P.K. Gurudasan, has said that the A.K. Antony Government is functioning as the "number one enemy" of the working class. He was inaugurating the 41st district conference of the Kerala NGO Union here today. Mr. Gurudasan said that more than any State in the country it was the Antony Government that seems to be too keen in implementing the anti-people policies of the Centre with much vigour. Mr. Antony also appears to be the only Chief Minister who endorses the Supreme Court verdict denying the State employees the right to strike, he alleged. Although the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, had initially opposed any legislation against the Supreme Court verdict, he later agreed to reconsider the same. However, Mr. Antony is averse to any such consideration. The State is under the control of a bureaucratic lobby and this has posed a situation dangerous for democracy. The Modernisation of Government Programme is aimed at commercialising even water supply and medical treatment, Mr. Gurudasan alleged. The CITU district secretary, P. Keshavan Nair, the FNPTO leader, R. Ramachandran Pillai, and the Central Government Employees Confederation leader, T.V. Radhakrishna Kumar, addressed. The conference re-elected M.E. Alfred and V.P. Jayaprakash Menon as president and secretary respectively. The other office bearers are, T. Vilasini and A.K. Shankar, vice presidents, R. Chandran Pillai and M. Salim Kutty, joint secretaries and M. Mathew, treasurer.
