CHENNAI, MARCH 6. With the Tamil Nadu Government deciding to hand over the fake stamp paper cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a formal notification by the Centre enabling the agency to take up the probe is required. This is only to fulfil a legal requirement, a senior CBI officer said today. During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation petition praying for transferring the cases to the CBI, at present being handled by the Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), the Government submitted before the Madras High Court that it had decided to entrust the investigation to the Central agency. The court recorded the submission and disposed of the application. The officer said unlike cases in which High Courts directed the CBI to take over investigation, in the present case, it was the State Government which decided to hand over the probe to the agency. The State should write to the Centre for a CBI probe. The Centre in turn, after consulting the CBI, will issue a notification of the case being taken over by the agency. No communication has been received so far from the Centre, he said.
