Health lectures for common man

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 6. To make the public more responsible towards their health, the Delhi Society for Promotion of the Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD) along with India International Centre (IIC) and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) is going to organise a series of health lectures for the common man.

Besides educating the public about the several common ailments, general precautions to be taken and care during treatment, the lecture series will also provide an opportunity to interact with doctors and clear doubts about any ailment or medical conditions. The lecture series will be made available free of cost and will discuss ailments including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, cerebral stroke, digestive ailment and medicine for the elderly.

The first of these lectures, planned from March 2004 to February 2005, will begin at IIC towards the end of March.

"We will be discussing themes including smoking and health and the body- mind relationship for holistic development. This is the first such initiative by any agency. Through this programme we are hoping to reach the general public encouraging them to take in their own hands their well-being. We are also trying to tell them that being aware about health is important and a necessity for their day-to-day existence,'' said the president of the DSPRUD, Ranjit Roy Choudhary, explaining this unique concept.

Speaking about the need for lectures of this kind, Dr. Choudhary said: "The common man should be aware of the need to take care of his mind and body and also understand the dynamics of everyday medicines so that he does not make fatal mistakes.''

Explaining why BVB is part of the initiative, its director, J. Veeraraghavan, said: "We have been organising lectures on various health- related topics and we are keen that the public receives the benefits of the same. We are also keen that useful information be provided to them.''

Meanwhile, all the lectures will be available in the form of a booklet for the public, which will include all the talks and discussions by eminent doctors and information about the several ailments and medical conditions discussed.
