KANCHEEPURAM, MARCH 6. The Chengalpattu principal sub-judge, M. Pugazhendi, yesterday convicted and sentenced five persons to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for attacking a couple and committing robbery. He also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 each. According to the prosecution, Palani (35) of Manojipatti in Thanjavur, Kottaiyan (25) of Sriperumbudur, Ramesh (26) of Ayanavaram in Chennai, Abhimannan (26) of Vallam in Thanjavur and Raja (26) of Salem armed with deadly weapons entered the house of a cloth merchant, Subramanian at Desamugipettai in Thirukkazhukundram in Kancheepuram district, on the night of October 20, 2001. They attacked Subramaniam and his wife, Poongodi, and decamped with 15 sovereign jewels and Rs. 20,000 in cash. The Thirukkazhukundram police arrested the accused and filed the case in the principal sub-court at Chengalpattu.
