THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 6. The confrontation between the City Corporation and the Government over the construction of a petrol pump near the National Highway bypass at Aakulam has taken a new turn with the Karikkakam ward councillor, S. Ratheendran, moving the High Court against the Government move to legitimise the operation of the outlet. The Corporation maintains that the pump owners are guilty of zonal violation, breach of building rules and unlicensed trade. The pump has come up in 25 cents of land, which falls within the area earmarked for the Canal Walk project. Following sustained pressure from the councillors representing the Kadakampally, Karikkakam and Chakka wards, the local body had issued notices five times asking the pump owner to close down the unit. But each time, the Government stepped in to quash the move through stay orders issued by the Local Self-Government Department. The councillors accuse the Government of interfering in the functioning of the local body and legitimising unauthorised construction. They say the failure to clamp down on the pump would deprive the Corporation of its authority to take stern action against offenders and lead to public protest.
