Tribals' plea to Congress for quota in seats

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 6. The Andhra Pradesh State Adivasi Girijan Samakhya has appealed to the All-India Congress Committee to allocate at least one Assembly seat in every Telangana district and the Bhadrachalam (ST) Lok Sabha seat to tribals, keeping in view their population of 27.3 lakhs in the region.

This appeal has been made by Chanda Lingaiah Dora, convener of the samakhya and chairman of the Khammam Zilla Parishad, in a letter to the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. Releasing the letter at a press conference here on Friday, he urged the party to retain the seven Assembly and one Lok Sabha ST (Bhadrachalam) reserved seats.

Mr. Lingaiah said he was making the appeal as "it was reliably learnt" that the party was contemplating allotting these seats to the Left parties. The seats listed by him are: Utnoor, Asifabad (Adilabad), Mulugu (Warangal), Yellandu, Burgamphad, Bhadrachalam, Bhadrachalam Lok Sabha (Khammam) and Devarakonda (Nalgonda).

The letter stated that tribals were "subjected" to threats by naxalites, police and landlords and needed the party's representation to ventilate their grievances. It requested that the ST seats in Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam districts be retained by the Congress.
