BANGALORE, MARCH 6. A man and a woman died of malaria here on Friday. Although there were reports of the death of a child, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) could not confirm whether it was a case of malaria. Eight persons are being treated for malaria at Victoria Hospital. The victims were among 26 persons, members of five families, all related, who visited Simsha in Mandya to perform a religious ceremony about two weeks ago. They are suspected to have contracted the disease during the trip. The dead have been identified as Mahadev and Channamma, both 35. The BMP Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy, said this was only a theory of the BMP which was yet to be corroborated by investigations. A BMP release said some members of the five families who lived in Bande Slums had fever 10 days after their visit to Simsha. But their condition was not diagnosed as malaria when they visited local medical practitioners. Mahadev and Channamma were admitted to Victoria Hospital only when they had "complications of malaria". The others were responding to the treatment at the hospital. The BMP, which has launched intensive spraying of pesticides in the area to eliminate mosquitoes, has advised the residents to report any case of fever to the BMP hospital at Azadnagar to enable an early diagnosis. The Directorate of Health Services has been directed to conduct an entomological survey in Bangalore and Simsha to identify the cause of outbreak of malaria. The BMP Commissioner said malaria could be treated if it was detected early.
