Anantapur
By Our Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR, MARCH 7. The All India Congress Committee president, Sonia Gandhi, will visit Anantapur district on March 10. According to the district party leaders, she would console the families of farmers who had committed suicide in Marthadu village of Garladinne mandal. The party would also offer financial assistance to the families. Talking to reporters the District Congress Committee leaders -- A. Venkatarami Reddy, N. Raghuveera Reddy and B. Narayana Reddy - blamed the anti-farmer policies of the Central and State Governments for the suicide of farmers. They reiterated that the Congress would pay Rs. 2 lakhs ex gratia to each of the families of farmers who had committed suicide. They contended that even if an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs was paid to the families of all the farmers who had committed suicide in the district, the amount would not cross Rs. 10 crores. But, the Chandrababu Naidu Government was keen on writing letters to 2-crore individual beneficiaries of Government schemes at a cost of Rs. 12 crores.
