Manipur
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI, MARCH 7. The Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) militant outfit to withdraw its "death sentence" against the BJP's Manipur unit president, Th. Chaoba Singh. V. Satish, who is in charge of the BJP's affairs in the northeastern States, told The Hindu today that he had urged the underground outfit to allow the party to function democratically in Manipur and not to target its workers. Mr. Singh had sought a "pardon" from the KYKL, he said. "I have issued an appeal to the militant outfit to allow the BJP to function democratically in Manipur. We hope that the problem would be sorted out soon and there would be no obstruction to any of our workers," Mr. Satish said. The party had moved the State Government and the Union Home Ministry for provision of adequate security to Mr. Singh, he added. Earlier, the KYKL had set February 15 as the deadline for Mr. Singh's resignation from the party. Other BJP workers would be targeted if they failed to secure his resignation, it said and "banned" the BJP from holding meetings, workshop and other election-related activities. However, the BJP went ahead with the inauguration of its election office in Imphal and began preparations for the elections. Mr. Singh, who appealed to the KYKL through local newspapers on February 27, sought "forgiveness" and asked the outfit to "excuse him for the past mistakes that he had committed." Mr. Satish said that the BJP would field its own candidates for both the Lok Sabha seats from the State and that an announcement would be made at the central election committee meeting on March 14.
