Tributes paid to Madhava Reddy

Hyderabad: The courage of the late Alimineti Madhava Reddy in speaking out against the violent ways of Naxalites, which ultimately cost him his life at the extremists' hands, came in for praise by Telugu Desam leaders at a meeting held to commemorate his fourth death anniversary at NTR Bhavan here on Sunday.

The wife of the slain Minister, Uma Madhava Reddy, recalled cautioning her husband to curtain his outspokenness but he was convinced that extremists were pursuing the wrong path. She said Madhava Reddy was so involved in public life that politics always received precedence over his family life. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, used the platform to reiterate his appeal to naxalites to join the mainstream. He described Madhava Reddy as a courageous and cheerful person who got along easily with his colleagues. The TD Politburo member, K. Yerran Naidu, and others spoke.

A four-minute film on Madhava Reddy was screened at the meeting.

CPI(M) seeks withdrawal of GOs on cooperatives

HYDERABAD: B.V. Raghavulu, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on Sunday demanded immediate scrapping of GOs 94 and 308 and ordinance 11 pertaining to the Cooperative Department as they lead to rendering 5,000 employees of primary agricultural cooperative societies unemployed and seeking to justify their dismissal. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, which was released later to the press, he accused the Government of releasing GO 94 with antedate even after the election notification was announced. The CPI (M) leader termed it `undemocratic' to issue the GO as `dictated' by the World Bank.

He alleged that the Minister for Cooperation had lied by stating that no PACS employee would be harmed whereas GO 308 clearly indicated that advances would be released towards PACS establishment charges only after the employees were removed.

MRPS to continue struggle

HYDERABAD: The Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) on Sunday resolved to continue to agitate until the overall development of the entire lot of those belonging to the Madiga community was achieved.

The MRPS State President, Kommuri Kanaka Rao Madiga, told the gathering of MRPS members at a day-long meeting here that it had been 10 years since the MRPS was launched. The sustained struggle did achieve something, but if one were to look at figures, only 5 per cent of Madigas in the State were benefited, he said.

NSUI panels for Sonia visit

HYDERABAD: The national Secretariat of National Students' Union of India has constituted a three-member committee to ensure active participation of youth in the proposed programmes of the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, on March 10, 11 and 12 in the State.

According to Syed Azmatullah Hussaini, State NSUI president, the committee members are: D. Srinivas Reddy (for Nandyal on March 10), A.Vijay Kumar (Karimnagar, March 11) and P. Nageshwar Rao (Vijayawada, March 12). All of them are vice-presidents of the State NSUI.

10 hurt in group clash

ANANTAPUR: Rivalry between two families led to a group clash during the Mohurram festivities at Puttaparthi in the district late last night. Ten persons of the two groups were injured in the clash. According to the police and information reaching here, the families of Pullappa and the former MPTC member, Satyanarayana, both followers of the TDP, had differences since 1998. A small incident during the Mohurram celebrations trigged the clash. The clash began in the festivities spread to the families of the two groups within minutes and 10 persons of both sides were injured seriously. All the injured were admitted to hospital.

Guard dies as gun goes off

Rajahmundry: Nanna Sudheer, a security guard of Central Bank of India here, died on the spot when his gun went off accidentally and the bullet pierced through his head. He was found dead in a pool of blood. The incident occurred around 10.30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the Circle-Inspector, Vijaya Sekhar, the guard was a native of a village near Guntur.

Witness in rape case murdered

KURNOOL: A witness in a rape case was found murdered at Tadikanapalli near here on Sunday. According to reports, Roganna, 40, was done to death by a group of persons in the village. He was a witness in the rape case of his brother's daughter. Roganna, who belonged to the Scheduled Caste, was to depose before the court shortly. He was reportedly under pressure from the accused in the case.

Rise in temperature

HYDERABAD: A maximum day temperature of 41 degree Celsius was recorded in the State on Sunday, the highest so far during this season. It was recorded in Kurnool.

The minimum night temperature in the State went up to 17 degree Celsius. It was recorded in Arogyavaram. Dry weather continued in the State with the day temperature changing little all over. The day temperature was above normal at a few places in Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra. Weather will be dry on Monday.

Ex-MLA campaigns in Badvel

Cuddapah: The former Congress MLA, K. Madanmohan Reddy, on Sunday asserted that the Congress alone could give a stable rule and ensure the development of the State. Speaking at the Somasila submersible villages in Gopavaram mandal in Badvel constituency during the party's campaign, he accused the State Government of being tardy in paying compensation to the displaced villagers. The Government owed Rs. 150 crores to the affected villagers, he said. Recalling that he had ensured payment of compensation amounting to Rs. 30 crores, when he was the Congress MLA, Mr. Reddy said the TDP Government paid an equivalent amount in the last nine years.

Seven hurt in road accident

KURNOOL: Seven passengers of an RTC bus were injured when the bus and a lorry collided near Peapuly in Kurnool district on Sunday. The bus was proceeding to Anantapur when the lorry coming in the opposite direction collided with it. The injured were shifted to a hospital.

Muslims seek Nellore seat

NELLORE: Several Muslim religious heads and intellectuals on Sunday appealed to the political parties to allot the Nellore Assembly seat to the community this time. In a statement signed by the religious heads and intellectuals -- Imam Syed Abubacker, Mufti Mohammed Ilias Saheb, M.A. Aziz, M.A. Hafiz, Hafiz Shakeel, Shakil Ahmed -- and others said the community had been doing social service for the last few decades and it was only to consolidate the service orientation, that the seat was being sought. During the last 56 years, several political parties have been requested to consider the request, but unfortunately none took it seriously.

Ex-servicemen to meet NCC official

TIRUPATI: Members of the Chittoor District Ex-Servicemen Federation will be taking a delegation on Monday to the Group Commander of the NCC Headquarters here to discuss the general issues concerning them and seek his counsel. The general body of the association, Tirupati, which met on Sunday with its president, A. Purushothama Naidu, in the chair, also discussed the feasibility of running a security services organisation for promotion of their self-employment. The association general secretary, K. Ramachandraiah, appealed to the members to avail of the house tax exemption extended through the G.O.Ms. No: 370 to the ex-servicemen constructing houses even in the panchayat areas.

Danish expert for Nalgonda

Hyderabad: Eli Dahi, Chairman of Environmental Development Corporation, Denmark, will be visiting Nalgonda district to help design household and community defluoridation units. According to a press release from Sai Oral Health Foundation, Dr. Dahi has developed appropriate technologies for this in Tanzania and these have been successfully tested. These units can be used by schools and households to reduce fluoride content in drinking water at a low cost. Dr. Dahi's visit is in response to an invitation from A. S. Narayana who met him at the recent international workshop on Fluorosis Prevention and Defluoridation of Water held in Colombo from March 2 to 6.
