The event was well-attended by all the superstars as well as emerging artistes. Sreekumar, Radhika Thilak and Jyothsna, and many others participated in the skits, songs and dances. The stage show was directed by the directors, T.K. Rajeev Kumar and Priyadarsan. M.T. Vasudevan Nair, noted writer, scenarist and filmmaker, was presented the Life Time Achievement Award for his contributions to Malayalam cinema. The Asianet chairman, Reji Menon, presented the award to Mr. Vasudevan Nair. The director, Priyadarsan, who is completing 25 years in cinema, was also honoured at the function.

`Ente Veedu Appoontem,' directed by Sibi Malayil, was selected as the best Malayalam film, while the prize for the best director went to Sathyan Anthikkad for the film, `Manassinakkare.'

The award for best actor was given to Mohanlal for his role in `Balettan,' while Meera Jasmine was selected as the best actress for her roles in T.V. Chandran's `Padham Onnu Oru Vilapam,' and Lohithadas' `Kasthuriman.' Sheela, the veteran actress who made a comeback through `Manassinakkare,' was given the Special Asianet Award.

The award for the best scenarist was given to Renjith for `Mizhi Randilum.' M.G. Sreekumar and K.S. Chithra were selected as the best male and female playback singers. The song, `Marakkudayal,' from `Manassinakkare,' won the award for Mr. Sreekumar while Ms. Chithra won it for `Enthinay nee,' and `Ikkiliyal.' Velar Sarathchandra Varma won the best lyricist award for the song, `Varmazhaville...,' (`Mizhi Randilum') and M. Jayachandran, the best music director (`Kannil kannil...' and `Innale ente..').

S. Kumar was given the best cinematographer award for `Pattalam,' and Ranjan Abraham won the best editor award for `C.I.D. Moosa.' Bava won the best art director award for `Mullavalliyum Thenmavum,' with Pandyan winning the best make-up artist prize for `Manassinakkare.'

Master Kalidas, son of the star-couple Jayaram and Parvathy, won the best child artiste award, adding one more prize to his credit this year.

Nayantara was selected as the Jeeva Debut Actress for her role in `Manassinakkare,' and Johny Antony was given the best debut director for the film, `C.I.D. Moosa.' The ceremonies began with the veteran actor, Madhu, and the actress, Ms. Sheela, lighting the traditional lamp together. The actor-director, Sreenivasan, and the actor, Mukesh, were the comperes for the show. Mamootty and Innocent, president of AMMA, who presented the programmes also spoke.

The crisis in the film industry began with the AMMA deciding to participate in the award nite and the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (representing producers, exhibitors and distributors) accusing AMMA of retracting from an earlier agreement which had provisions against the members appearing in stage and television shows.
