VELLORE, MARCH 8. Women residing in the fifth ward of the Vellore Municipality at Thottapalayam besieged the municipal office here today, protesting against the supply of `contaminated drinking water' through pipelines. More than 100 women of Thottapalayam besieged the office of the municipal commissioner. They displayed bottles containing the `contaminated water'. They said they were not getting water regularly, and no action had been taken to solve the problem. When contacted, the Commissioner, A.N. Santhanam, refuted the claim that the water was contaminated. He said the main problem was that the National Highways Authority of India, which is undertaking the work of four-laning of the NH 46 Chennai-Bangalore Road, had asked the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to re-locate the pipeline from the municipal water supply headworks at Karugambathur to facilitate the work. The people were not getting the water since the TWAD Board had not executed the work. However, the municipal authorities opened the valve this evening, and the water was supplied to the Thottapalayam residents, he said.
