GULBARGA, MARCH 8. A property dispute in the family of a former MLA from Shahabad, Sharanappa F. Bairy (86), took a bloody turn today with his brother's grandsons allegedly killing Mr. Bairy's wife and two daughters. Mr. Bairy, who was stabbed several times, is battling for life in a hospital here. The police said the assailants allegedly barged into the house of Mr. Bairy in Chitapur, 45 km. from here, and slit the throat of Lakshmibai (55), wife of Mr. Bairy, and his daughters, Renuka (20) and Chandrakala (24). The Superintendent of Police, Ramachandra Rao, who returned from the spot, said the three alleged assailants surrendered to the police. They also surrendered the weapons used for committing the crime. Dr. Rao said the three allegedly executed their victims systematically with two persons holding the victim and the third slitting her throat. Mr. Bairy's two other married daughters were not present at the time of the carnage. Mr. Bairy did not allow the killers to slit his throat. In the struggle, the accused allegedly stabbed him several times. He was rushed to the Basaveshwar General and Teaching Hospital here with multiple wounds. Although he was operated upon immediately, he was said to be in a serious condition. Dr. Rao said preliminary questioning of the accused revealed that the reason for the attack was a property dispute. The three arrested persons, Sharanappa (28), Kashappa (26), and Shivappa (24) were sons of Fakeerappa whose father, Sanna Sharanapppa, was the younger brother of Mr. Bairy. The police have arrested Mr. Fakeerappa and Saibanna Bhajantri, son of Kashamma, sister of Mr. Bairy on the charges of abetment and conspiracy. Dr. Rao said the accused alleged that Mr. Bairy did not share the ancestral property with his three brothers and two sisters or their children. He allegedly sold the property consisting of a shopping complex in Chitapur to a Hyderabad-based person for Rs. 14 lakh about a fortnight ago. The sale deed was to be registered today. The accused chose to strike today to prevent it. Saibanna Bhajantri's grouse against Mr. Bairy was that he was not allowing him to make use of the land in his name in Chitapur by getting a stay from the local court. Mr. Bairy, who had won from Shahabad Assembly constituency on the Communist Party of India (CPI) ticket in 1978, had to make way for K.B. Shanappa to get elected from Shahabad in 1983 and 1985.
