EC recognition for Pawar-led faction

NEW DELHI, MARCH 8. The Election Commission today recognised the faction led by Sharad Pawar as the real Nationalist Congress Party allowing it to retain the `clock' symbol.

``In the present case, the Commission is satisfied beyond any doubt that the group led by Mr. Pawar has far superior numerical support in the organisational and legislature wings of the party,'' the full Election Commission said in its 26-page order.

The Commission said it did not see any merit in the contention of Sangma that the Pawar group by merely deciding to enter into an electoral alliance with the INC had abandoned the pivotal ideology of the party and that his (Sangma's) group being the crusader of the basic ideology was alone entitled to represent the party.

``The party constitution does not say that the party's very existence is dependent upon upholding the principle of opposing persons of foreign origin from being Prime Minister of the country,'' the order said.
