MADURAI, MARCH 8. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 35.8 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 22 degree Celsius.

Two killed in accident

Two persons were killed in a accident here tonight. According to the police, T. Rajaram (30), K. Sivakumar (25) and K. Dhanakumar (29) of K. Pudur were going to the Mattuthavani bus stand in an autorickshaw when a mini-bus collided head-on in front of the Circuit House.

They sustained injuries and were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital. While Rajaram and Sivakumar (the autorickshaw driver) were declared "brought dead," the condition of Dhanakumar was said to be critical.

Suicide alleged

A man who attempted suicide, after administering poison to his three sons, succumbed at the Government Rajaji Hospital here today.

The police said A. Rajendran (33) of Thanakankulam took the extreme step owing to domestic problems. He consumed pesticide after offering poisonous drink to R. Surya (6), R. Manikandan (5) and R. Moovendran (3), on Sunday night. They were rushed to the GRH where Rajendran died. The condition of Surya was said to be critical.

Woman passenger dies

A woman passenger returning from the `Mahamaham' festival died of cardiac arrest on board the Chennai Egmore-Madurai Vaigai Superfast Express here today.

According to the police, C. Chitra (32) of Kalavasal boarded the train in Tiruchi along with their family members. She complained of chest pain near Dindigul and fell unconscious. On information, railway authorities here arranged for doctors at the Dindigul railway station, who examined the patient and declared her dead.

The body was shifted to the residence of the bereaved family in an ambulance, the sources added.

Special counter

The Chokkikulam branch of the Indian Overseas Bank will operate a special counter at the Income Tax office, for the benefit of taxpayers, from March 10 to 15. Remittances under advance taxation and direct taxation can be done at this counter, which will function on all working days. Tax payees can also get challans immediately on payment of their taxes from the counter, according to a release.
