COIMBATORE, MARCH 8 . The small scale processing units in Tirupur have been called upon to make use of the `SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) - KfW Scheme' aimed at encouraging the units to adopt cleaner production measures. Representatives of the SIDBI explained the features of the scheme to the processing units during a recent programme organised by the Textiles Committee in Tirupur as part of its cluster development programme. SIDBI sources told The Hindu that the scheme was recently launched for select sectors such as foundries, electroplating and textile wet processing. It was designed by SIDBI in association with Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW), a Germany-based financial institution. Through this scheme, loans could be availed of by individual processing units in the town or by the common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) that were planning to adopt or were already involved in cleaner production efforts. It could be utilised by existing units or for new processing unit projects, the sources added. Assistance under the scheme (other than for CETPs) would be available for activities like automation improvements to maintain efficient operation and equipment modifications to reduce inefficiency. SIDBI sources said that processing was one of the main segments of the knitwear industry in the town, and project proposals could be submitted by interested units at the SIDBI office in Tirupur. The proposal would be examined by SIDBI appointed consultant.
