Art works showcasing women on display

HYDERABAD, MARCH 8. Paying ode to womanhood, the Salar Jung Museum opened an exclusive exhibition of paintings, photographs and sculptures showcasing goddesses, queens, warriors and dancers, some of which date back to the 2nd Century AD.

Titled `Feminine charm in art' the special exhibition organised, as a part of International Women's Day celebrations will be on till March 14. The exhibition inaugurated by V. Vedakumari of National Institute of Rural Development.

The art works also include clay figurines, miniatures, portraits and paintings on ivory obtained from Japan, Italy, England and various parts of the country. More than 100 art works are on display. These include a `Standing Venus made of Marble', `Three Graces', `A dancing lady' in porcelain, water paintings of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Jhansi Rani Lakshmi Bai and Chand Bibi, ruler of Bijapur.

Ms. Vedakumari said that India had produced great women in the form of leaders, warriors, scholars and freedom fighters. "Awareness is slowly dawning on the people that the girl child needs to be treated on par with boys. However, boys continue to be preferred in parts of the country even to this day," she pointed out.

The Director of the Museum A.K.V.S. Reddy was also present.
