Historian suspended for harassment

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 8. Controversial historian Makhan Lal was today suspended from the post of Director, Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management, by the Delhi Government in the wake of an independent enquiry into sexual harassment charges him. With reports of bungling in promotions also having been made, the Government has further set up another independent enquiry to look into the matter of any illegal promotions that were made during Prof. Lal's tenure. The suspension comes a week after the enquiry committee led by retired IAS officer Janak Juneja submitted its report.

The Delhi Government has, meanwhile, appointed the District Commissioner (South-West), Keshav Chand, as the acting director of the institute till a new head is appointed and has also ruled that the institute would now have three professors instead of two. Students of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University affiliated institute had accused the historian of using "derogatory'', "indecent'' and "unparliamentarily'' language and making indecent gestures in his capacity as the director of the institute last November.
