Rhetoric won't do

Sir - The work done by women is never taken into account in our country. They are unpaid domestic servants. A majority of women work in organised and unorganised sectors for more than 12 hours a day. As pointed out in the study by DIVA-India (The Hindu dated 2.03.04), the lack of awareness of their rights is a major problem. We celebrate Women's Day year after year, shout slogans, organise meetings and processions - that is all. It is high time we did something constructive to improve the status of women.

No footpaths

Sir - I hail from Nagpur and a visitor to Coimbatore, `the Manchester of South India', since 1968. I am shocked at the lack of footpaths even on busy National Highways like Avinashi Road. The City Corporation cannot afford to be a spectator to the increasing number of fatal accidents on roads within its limits, simply on the plea of economy measures or lack of funds for road development.

Road neglected

Sir - The panchayat road leading from 4th mile of Gudalur-Devershola main road to Vachikolli in Padanthurai village has been neglected for decades together.

This village road was laid in the early 50s with the help of residents of Padanthurai main village and handed over to the Devershola Town Panchayat.

People of this locality, numbering about 5,000, from various tribal settlements and from the Moundandan Chetty community face untold difficulties for their day-to-day requirements like sending children to schools and taking patients to hospitals. Though several representations have been made to the bureaucrats and political parties, no action has been taken.

Will the Government, which is advertising its achievements, take note of the sorry status of this village road?

Confusing signboards

Sir - Kudos to the Coimbatore Corporation for streamlining traffic by making arrangements for changing parking zone every alternate month. Parking zones on N.S.R. Road North and South are changed every odd and even months respectively.

The change of display boards with `Parking/No Parking' signs is not effectively done. Repeated corrections on the existing boards confuse motorists with the result that they park their vehicles on both sides.

The solution is to fix detachable signboards, which could be interchanged with that in the opposite direction. The tubular pole should be a permanent fixture and the signboard attached to the frame of the pole.

Since all boards are usually sponsored, it will not be difficult for the Corporation to install them.

Transparency, a must

The Budget proposals on improvement of roads, new drinking water schemes etc often make a common man jubilant. To ensure that the benefit reaches society, details of all such schemes must be properly displayed in the respective areas. Reports should be invited from the public on default in its execution.

For example, Tiruchy Road is being re-laid. But no one knows the stipulated length and the thickness. Imagine if the road is three inches less in length and two inches less in thickness what would be the net amount saved? Dates of inspection by the higher officials must also be notified.
